Book review: Counted with the Stars by Connilyn Cossette

Great read! I really enjoyed reading this work of Biblical historical fiction! I recommend this book to all who search and wonder.

This is a story regarding the plagues/attempt for freedom in the Bible told by an outsider of the Israelite group, an Egyptian slave. I especially loved the Egyptian history as it related to this story. Being fast paced, full of intrigue and mystery, I finished this book in a matter of days!

In the Bible, it mentions those who decided to flee Egypt ( and Pharoah) and essentially be integrated into the Israelite tribes. This was not a light decision and involved a lot more than we think. I loved stretching my brain and viewing this common-told story from a different perspective!

I absolutely loved reading this book. I don’t say those words lightly either. This historical fictional story had me captivated from the very beginning.

Pharaoh has held the Hebrew nation in slavery for around 400 years.  Moses, a man with a complicated past, has been called to lead this freedom mission. As the plagues dictated by God fell over the land deep in the heart of Egypt, it is hard to imagine what that looked like on a personal level.  How it felt to endure suffering and view it, and also the cost of freedom. This is a story about a God who demands such raw and blind obedience.  In a world where power is everything, Yahweh is the very definition of power. What will it take to convince Pharaoh to let the Hebrew nation leave? What will it take to convince the Hebrew nation that the cost of freedom is worth it?

If you have ever wondered more about the Miriam of the Old Testament and more background regarding the plagues, this is the right book!  The author Mesu Andrews did a great job with suspense and action, I found myself surprised at each twist and turn.  Even started reading along with the story in the Bible. At first, the Hebrew names and words was overwhelming, but I found it only added to the story as it allowed me to let go of previous held assumptions.
